The answer to “how much will it cost” is…

… “it depends”!

Let me explain…

One of the most common questions I get asked as a Designer is “How much is a <insert room> renovation going to cost me?”. Other questions that follow a similar theme are “how long will it take?” or “how much do you charge for design work?”

This is such a complex question because the answer is impacted by so many factors. Let us look at a few of the variables at play.

Scope and size of project

The size of a room or the scope of a project significantly impacts the cost and timeline. A simple bedroom redesign will naturally be quicker and less expensive than overhauling an entire home. As a project unfolds, you may decide to make some changes to the initial plan. These alterations, whether minor or significant, can have a cascading effect on both the budget and timeline. Flexibility is a key aspect of interior design, but it also means that predicting every twist and turn in the project becomes nearly impossible.

Material and finish selections

Choice of materials and finishes will have the most impact on the cost and time as this be different if you opt for bespoke, high-end materials vs. more budget-friendly alternatives. To add to the complexity, a lot of these items may have lead times and there may be delays in the availability of specific materials which can disrupt the project schedule and potentially increase costs. External factors such as global events, market fluctuations, and production issues can also impact the availability and pricing of materials.

Customization requirements

Interior design is inherently personalized, with each project requiring a unique approach. Customized solutions, intricate designs, and specific client preferences all add layers of complexity that can affect both the cost and timeline. Designing custom elements adds flair but also time and expense. Tailoring furniture, cabinetry, or fixtures to fit unique spaces contributes to these intricacies.

Regulatory approvals and permits

In most cases, a renovation project cannot be undertaken without the necessary permits from your city/ town and navigating the bureaucratic maze for permits and approvals can be frustrating and time-consuming. Local regulations and processes can extend project timelines beyond the designer's control and it adds an element of uncertainty to project timelines.

What I can promise you instead are initial estimates based on my experience to help you gauge a starting point and manage expectations. I have also put into place a project management process with various project phases and milestones providing you with a clear breakdown of the work and its progress. Additionally, regular check-ins and project updates will be provided which will keep you in the loop, even if you are not involved in the day-to-day activities. Throughout the process, I encourage your involvement and collaboration to streamline decision-making so that we can reduce potential delays. One last thing to remember is that it is your budget that drives the selections (and therefore the cost), rather than the other way around and a good Designer will be able to help you make the most of your budget.

The beauty of bespoke spaces often lies in the unforeseen possibilities that unfold during the creative journey. While pinpointing exact numbers may be difficult to do, what I can offer is a partnership built on trust, transparency, and a shared vision for transforming your space into something truly remarkable.
