The #1 mistake I’m making with this renovation is living in a construction zone 😷🤦‍♀️ Although I would have preferred to not be around the dust and the noise, we were not in a position to move out of the house. If you are planning a large renovation that touches multiple rooms, it might be a good idea to consider moving out of the space for the duration of the project. You need plan the cost of a rental into your budget. However, if you decide to stay in your home, here are some survival tips: ✨ Don’t underestimate the mess, dust, noise, and disruption. Create a “clean zone” and set up a separate space where you can retreat for a break from the chaos. In my case, that’s our “garage kitchen”. ✨ Don’t skip packing up. Box up and cover furniture, decor, delicate items, and everyday items to protect them from dust. This saves time on cleaning and protects your belongings. ✨ Don’t overlook air quality. Invest in an air purifier or create temporary barriers with plastic sheeting to keep dust from spreading. You might also need to change out your furnace filters more frequently. ✨ Don’t forget mental breaks. Schedule breaks outside the house to refresh yourself. Living in a construction zone is exhausting — going outside and getting some fresh air helps maintain your sanity. Creating a combined bedroom and study/ home office can be tricky especially if you’re working with a smaller room. This room is a standard bedroom size and if we approached it just as a bedroom, we’d be ok but adding in a working space is where it’s getting a little challenging. There is also no built in storage area or closet in this room which means we need to bring in those storage options. In this case, using standard size furniture may not be the most ideal option. After reviewing this with my client, we have decided to look for slightly more compact options to facilitate optimal flow. The worst thing we could do is cram the room with pieces that fill up all the space and not be able to move or open cupboards. We made some visible progress at #projectdreamhome last week but work has slowed down a little because we are waiting on a few other things. We thought this renovation was the perfect time to change all the windows in our house. They were quite old and highly energy inefficient, not keeping the heat in and even letting in the draft in some areas. We are expecting the windows to be ready some time in the next couple of weeks 🤞 and we can get the rest of the finishes installed once this is done. We still have to install backsplash behind the sink (around the window), install wallpaper in the family room, apply a final coat of paint, and install all the light fixtures. I’m hopeful that we will be done in time for Christmas but sometimes renovations do take on a life of their own. More updates to come so stay tuned.
